Fort Hays Stamp Club will host their 2nd Annual Exhibit Stamp Show in October at The Hays Mall - 2918 Vine - Hays, KS. 

The Fort Hays Stamp Club is hosting a display of stamp collections at The Hays Mall on Saturday October 9th.  The show will include hundreds of collections of stamps that feature the U.S. States, birds, flowers, U.S. famous figures, animals, sports and the state birds of the 50 States. Other commemorative stamps will include the original 13 States and Olympic stamps. There will be approximately a thousand stamps on display at this show.  

The Fort Hays Stamp Club holds several shows throughout the year, including the annual Fort Hays Stamp Show that is held in April each year.

Membership to the Fort Hays Stamp Club is open to everyone interested in philately. The Fort Hays Stamp Club is a non-profit club made up of philatelists involved in furthering the enjoyment of their hobby, sharing their knowledge of the wide and numerous fields of stamp collecting.

Meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month – September thru May. Visitors are always welcome to attend the meetings to learn more about the club, trade stamps, buy or sell collections and learn how to get started in stamp collecting. Membership provides for educational programs, assistance with buying or selling stamp supplies, seminars, annual club dinner and shows, participate in a buy-sell-trade at the monthly meetings and stamp quizzes.

Sightings and a video a few years ago gave ornithologists hope that a bird believed extinct since the 1940s was still alive. But no one since has found an ivory billed woodpecker in the swamps of Arkansas, and much debate has developed over the fuzzy photos and video evidence.

The possibility that the species still exists has invigorated efforts not only to conserve the bird but has also created an economic boon for the small community of Brinkley, Ark., said Curtis Wolf, director of the Wetlands Education Center.

The ivory billed woodpecker, about 20 inches long with a 30-inch wingspan, was the largest in North America. The habitat of the last known population of the birds was clear cut in the 1940s. Until 2005, when University of Arkansas professor David Luneau happened upon and shot video of what may have been an ivory billed woodpecker, the bird had not been seen since 1944.

'Ghost Bird,' produced and directed by Scott Crocker, explores all sides of the story, focusing on the debate of whether spotters really saw an ivory-billed woodpecker and also on the issue of people's role in conserving our natural resources and how natural resources can also be used in ecotourism to help economies of small communities.

Christmas Past at Historic Fort Hays - 1472 Hwy 183 Alt – 7-9 pm - 785-625-6812 – Free admission. Join us for our Christmas open house. Experience an old-fashioned Christmas at the Fort as it would have been decorated in the late 1800’s. Discover how soldiers and civilians who lived at the fort spent their Christmas holiday. In the officers’ quarters, visitors can sample fresh-baked, old fashioned chocolate chunk cookies and the children will receive a bag of goodies from Father Christmas who will be seated next to the large Victorian Christmas tree in the east parlor. Christmas carols will be sung in the west parlor of the officers’ quarters. In the blockhouse, children will be able to construct a cornucopia Christmas tree ornament. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides around the fort grounds and frontiersmen will be serving hot spiced cider to help warm up the wagon riders. Near the blockhouse, soldiers will be making hot fried apples over a campfire. The buildings will be decorated with homemade ornaments, popcorn garland, candles, luminaries, kerosene lanterns and decorations of the 1860’s. Visitors are asked to go to the Visitor Center to begin their tour.
